Where Are They Now

Dixie Carter (Julia Sugarbaker)
After Designing Women ended, Dixie Carter continued working steadily in television, film, and theater. She earned Emmy nominations for her memorable guest role on Family Law and later introduced herself to a new generation of viewers as Gloria Hodge on Desperate Housewives. Carter remained active until her passing in 2010 at the age of 70.

Delta Burke (Suzanne Sugarbaker)
Following her departure from Designing Women, Delta Burke starred in several television series, including Delta and Women of the House. She also appeared on Broadway and became an outspoken advocate for mental health awareness after discussing her struggles with depression. In recent years, Burke has largely stepped away from acting and enjoys a private life with her husband, actor Gerald McRaney.

Annie Potts (Mary Jo Shively)
Annie Potts went on to enjoy one of the most successful careers of the cast after Designing Women. She starred in the long-running sitcom Any Day Now, voiced Bo Peep throughout the Toy Story franchise, and later became a fan favorite as Meemaw on Young Sheldon. Potts continues to work regularly in television and film.

Jean Smart (Charlene Frazier Stillfield)
Jean Smart became the most critically acclaimed post-Designing Women success story. She earned Emmy Awards for performances in Frasier, Samantha Who?, and Hacks, while also appearing in acclaimed series such as 24, Fargo, Mare of Easttown, and Watchmen. Smart remains one of Hollywood's most respected actresses.

Meshach Taylor (Anthony Bouvier)
After Designing Women, Meshach Taylor continued appearing in television, film, and theater, including starring roles in Dave's World and numerous guest appearances on popular series. He remained a familiar face on stage and screen until his passing in 2014 at the age of 67 following a battle with cancer.

Jan Hooks (Carlene Dobber)
Jan Hooks left Saturday Night Live to join Designing Women and later continued acting in television and film, including memorable appearances on 3rd Rock from the Sun and 30 Rock. Widely regarded as one of the greatest sketch comedians of her generation, Hooks passed away in 2014 at the age of 57 after battling cancer.

Julia Duffy (Allison Sugarbaker)
After joining Designing Women during its final season, Julia Duffy continued a successful television career with appearances on series including Reba, Drake & Josh, Shameless, and numerous Hallmark productions. She has remained active in both television and theater.

Alice Ghostley (Bernice Clifton)
Alice Ghostley continued delighting audiences with guest appearances on television after Designing Women. Already beloved for roles on Bewitched and many other classic sitcoms, she remained a respected character actress until retiring. Ghostley passed away in 2007 at the age of 81.

Gerald McRaney (Recurring Guest Star)
Although not a regular cast member, Gerald McRaney made several memorable appearances on Designing Women while building one of television's longest-running careers. He later starred in series including Major Dad, Promised Land, This Is Us, and NCIS: Los Angeles, earning an Emmy Award for his work. McRaney continues acting and remains married to Delta Burke.
